TABLE OF FIGURES

Figure 1: Value Added Analysis for Biocides in Personal Care Products

The Biocides industry had a difficult year as margins are being squeezed by increasing raw material and energy costs. In addition, the Biocides industry has to contend with increasing regulatory pressures and misleading reports on preservatives. However most Biocide suppliers are "positive" on the personal care market due to favourable trends (economies coming out of recession) and the interest in alternative approaches to preservation such as the increased use of synergists, synergistic blends which utilize existing chemistries, organic acids, botanicals or technological approaches.

The global consumption of biocides in Personal Care was $ 820 million at active manufacture level in 2011. This performance reflects not only end industry growth, regulatory and technological changes but also the growing use of ‘natural’ biocides. Specialty biocides include bactericides, bacteriostats and fungicides.

Countries such as Brazil, China, Russia, Eastern Europe, India and South America continue to offer growth opportunities as per capita income rises which transfers into increased demand for Personal Care products.

For the future, Biocide companies are expected to continue the introduction of new formulations to address shifts in demand. For example there has been a big increase in the supply of paraben free formulations. In addition, less sensitising biocides are increasing their share of the market such as the substitution of cmit/mit formulations with mit. Also companies must also examine the specific needs of each regional market to adjust their strategies for growth accordingly.
