Mobile Learning: Learning in the Palm of Your Hand
ASTD - American Society for Training and Development, May 2011, Pages: 40
It is no secret that mobile computing is here, but what does that mean for learning professionals and the learning function? How will it affect instructional design? What influence, if any, will device manufacturers, platform providers, and software developers have on mobile learning’s future? ASTD and i4cp partnered to investigate the topic and the resulting report, Mobile Learning: Learning in the Palm of Your Hand, addresses these questions and many others by examining the existing literature, and speaking with practitioners and thought leaders who are proponents and early adopters of mobile learning. The time is ripe for organizations to “get smart” on the current state future of mobile learning, and this report provides that foundational knowledge.
Organizations worldwide share a commonality: They are all faced with the challenge of keeping pace with the continual evolution of technology and determining how to best leverage it.
Learning leaders understand that with each introduction of new technology, the way that people connect with the world and obtain information and skills evolves. Mobile learning is simply the latest emerging trend along this technological and learning evolutionary timeline. A seemingly endless array of available devices, fiercely competitive operating systems, and continuously advancing web technology are combining to make the road ahead a bit murky. And while the future of mobile learning is speculative, it is clear that organizations have no alternative but to at least begin addressing the implications of the incorporation of mobile technology into their learning strategies – it is simply a matter of time and technology. This study explores how organizations are taking advantage of mobile learning and the future of this technology.
Some of the concepts examined in the study include:
- native applications vs. the mobile web - mobile learning vs. the classroom - mobile learning vs. performance support - mobile learning vs. virtual learning.
About This Study
This study represents a synthesis of interviews with thought leaders in the field of mobile learning, as well as practitioners from global organizations that are in varying phases of adoption of mobile learning applications. These interviews, along with a comprehensive review of available literature, form the foundation from which the ideas and recommendations in this study were derived.
