Mobile Data Offloading: Technology Benchmarking and Stakeholder
Frost & Sullivan, June 2011, Pages: 66
This research service offers insights on the technology capability, activities of stakeholders, analysis of their stakes, potential of alternate wireless technologies and their ability address offloading challenges and requirements in different scenarios. This research service helps stakeholders in assessing and identifying their position in the value chain to enhance their penetration in the market
Mobile Data Offload - Adoption of Alternate Technologies Creates Space for New Stakes
WiFi and Femtocell are Foremost among Alternate Wireless Technologies Deployed for Mobile Data offloading
Growing user demand for data intense applications and rising network capacity crunch has compelled mobile operators to seek alternate methods for effective and timely delivery. Explosive demand for smartphones and mobile devices has propelled data usage and spiked demand for data intense applications. Mobile data offload could play a very important role in defining the emerging trends of mobile communication. This technique alleviates the capacity crunch faced by the core mobile network and ensures faster and timely delivery of content. “Leveraging on existing and newer alternate wireless technologies, bandwidth consuming applications and data are offloaded from the cellular network and reaches the intended recipient,” notes the analyst of this research service. “Data takes an alternate path available in the overlay network, thus reducing burden on the 3G network.” Wireless fidelity (WiFi) and femtocell have evolved as robust alternate wireless technologies to address diverse requirements. The capabilities of these wireless technologies could be utilized by mobile operators to meet their ever growing bandwidth requirements. Existing hotspots and access points could be employed to offload data to overlay networks.
Although the market is progressing at a steady pace, there are some impediments stalling its momentum. The mere availability of alternate technologies does not facilitate uptake of data offload. From an adoption standpoint, user device compatibility with the wireless technology, ease of access, cost, security, and handover mechanisms are certain key challenges encountered by the consumers and vendors. Furthermore, from an implementation standpoint, stakeholders are restricted by ease of deployment, integration, handover initiation, availability of device and infrastructure supporting more than one alternate technology, portability speed and provision of uninterrupted service. Stakeholders capable of addressing hurdles surrounding implementation at different levels of the value chain could leverage on the numerous lucrative market opportunities.
Offloading of data from core mobile network to an alternate overlay network requires strong authentication and security mechanisms. Moreover, cost of deploying the offloading solution might be higher and might require modification of existing infrastructure. Solutions addressing security issues can achieve deeper market penetration. The rise in the number of mobile users also creates a demand for continuous service and availability of large scale hotspots and access points which translates to enhancement of handover techniques and increase in presence of mobile operator supported access points. Formation of strategic alliances and tie ups among different stakeholders is essential to provide better services to the consumer. “In the future, the mobile data offloading segment is expected to witness the advent of more competent solutions, newer techniques and increased interest and support from several wireless associations,” concludes the analyst. “This is expected to result in emergence of stronger and eminent stakeholders and in accelerated adoption of data offload solutions.”
