Austria Telecommunications Report Q4 2011
Business Monitor International, Oct 2011, Pages: 93
The Austria Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Austria's telecommunications industry.
Strong demand for broadband services in Austria in H111 pushed subscriber numbers for fixed and mobile accesses beyond the levels we had forecast for 2011 as a whole. Therefore, BMI has revised upwards its forecasts for broadband users (which includes fixed and mobile connections) and 3G mobile subscribers. Revised estimates of subscriber numbers at the two smallest mobile operators led to scaled down total mobile forecasts, although we maintain our existing growth pattern forecast. Finally, there were no appreciable changes in the fixed-line market and there are no revisions to the forecasts for this sector.
Austria's broadband market is increasingly being driven by mobile broadband services. So much so that broadband uptake in Q111 alone was stronger than BMI had been forecasting for the year as a whole. BMI has, therefore revised upwards the expectations for the broadband market, which should be boosted further in H211 by the launch of LTE mobile broadband services. Less than 50% of all broadband connections were made using mobile devices by March 2011 (the latest data from the regulator). BMI forecasts 23.9% growth in the broadband market, which would yield a YE2011 base of 4.64mn subscribers and a penetration rate of 55.3%. By the end of 2015 BMI forecasts there should be more than 6.5mn broadband subscribers, with a penetration rate of 77.5%.
So far, in 2011 there has been intense rivalry among the mobile operators, with competition particularly strong in the case of higher-value post-paid and data subscribers. By the end of 2011 more than 12.61mn mobile subscribers are expected, an annual growth rate of 4.1% and a penetration rate of just over 150%. Growth is forecast to continue to slow as the market becomes saturated and the operators’ increasingly focus on higher value segments. By 2015 there will be almost 13.65mn mobile subscribers, a penetration rate of almost 162%.
At the end of 2010 3G subscribers accounted for almost 48% of the market. By the end of 2015 BMI expects the number of 3G subscribers to rise to almost 10mn, more than 73% of the mobile market. By then, it is likely 4G services, provided through platforms based on LTE technology, will be used widely used in major population centres.
Finally, the Netherlands moved from joint fifth position to third place in this quarter's update to BMI's Western Europe Business Environment ranking chart, displacing Austria. This is no reflection on Austria's standing or recent performance. There were no adjustments made to any of Austria's scores this quarter, reflecting steady rather than outstanding growth for the country's telecommunications market. The country remains well above average in all categories surveyed by BMI.
