Directory of Australian Shipping, Air, Road and Rail Services 2010/2011 now available
The year 1961 certainly seems to be a distant memory but in retrospect it was a year full of significant events:
- John F Kennedy was inaugurated as the 35th President f the Unit State of America;
- Trams stopped running in Sydney – signalling the end of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest tramway network;
- The ill-fated Dianna Spencer, later to become Dianne, Princess of Wales, born in Norfolk, England;
- The conservative government of Robert Menzies, was re-elected for the sixth time;
- The ABC-TV current affairs program, Four Corners, screens for the first time;
- Lord Fury wins the Melbourne Cup;
- Rod Laver wins Wimbledon; and
- The Fab Four – otherwise known as The Beatles, made their debut live performance at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club.
Also making its debut in 1961 was the Australian Shipping Directory, then published by the former Daily Commercial News.
Much has changed in the intervening 50 years – but the Australian Shipping Directory has been published continuously during that time.
Now published by Informa Australia, the Lloyd’s List DCN directory has been expanded to include other forms of transport such as air, road and rail as the transport task become more and more integrated. As well, there is significant coverage on the service industries which are attached to shipping.
At over 170 pages, this indispensible reference book provides the most complete overview available of the Australian maritime, trade and transport sectors.
