Global Polystyrene Industry - End Use Sectors in China Driving the Demand
Summary
Polystyrene is one of the most widely used thermoplastic in a variety of industrial applications such as packaging, consumer electronics, appliances and medical devices. It is the fourth largest polymer produced globally after polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene. It has a density of approximately 1.05 g/cc due to which it is hard, rigid and brittle. It has a high chemical and thermal resistance making it suitable for use in the packaging and medical devices sectors. It is strong and has excellent electrical insulating properties also making it suitable for applications related to electrical appliances.
General purpose polystyrene (GPPS) can be blended with polybutadiene to enhance its properties. The product made after blending is known as High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) and used in a wide range of applications. HIPS has more applications than GPPS due to the enhanced properties.
The major polystyrene end use sectors are packaging, consumer electronics and appliances. Demand for polystyrene is driven by China which is the largest electronics and the second largest packaging industry in the world. China’s polystyrene demand benefits from the home appliances subsidy scheme announced by the Chinese government in November 2008. Continuous growth of end use sectors in China is maintaining demand growth. Global polystyrene demand declined in 2006 and 2009 but recovered in 2010 and is expected grow steadily until 2015.
