Gabon is situated on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa along the Gulf of Guinea and covers an area of 267,667 sq km. Libreville is the country’s capital and largest city. Gabon has an equatorial climate and rainforests cover more than four-fifths of the country. According to 2010 World Bank figures, the total number of inhabitants is 1.5m and the country counts within its populace more than 40 ethnicities of predominantly Bantu origin. The official language is French and it remains the dominant language for business and daily affairs. Gabon has had a multi-party political system, with the executive branch composed of a president, who serves as head of state, and a prime minister, who is head of government. Legislative power rests with the 120 seat bicameral parliament, composed of the Senate and the National Assembly. The highest arbiter in the judicial branch is the Constitutional Court.
