Beijing Yanqi Economic Development Zone

Beijing Yanqi Economic Development Zone (Beijing Yanqi EDZ), rated “BB” by China Knowledge in a research report on China’s industrial real estate published today. The EDZ, consisting of the former Beijing Huairou Yanqi Industrial Development Area, Beijing Fengxiang Science Development Zone and Huairou Beifang Jinwei Industrial Zone, was approved as a municipal-level development zone in 2006. It has an area of 10.9 sq km.
Beijing Yanqi EDZ is located in Huairou District in the northeastern part of Beijing, about 50 km from the city center. The zone enjoys convenient transportation. It is situated 30 km from Beijing Capital International Airport and 170 km from Tianjin Port. The zone is close to Beijing-Chengde Highway, Beijing-Chengde Railway and Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway.
The zone’s pillar industries are auto parts, food processing and electronics. By the end of 2010, more than 300 companies had invested in the zone. The zone’s total revenue reached RMB 17.1 billion in 2009. The zone has attracted over 70 foreign companies from 17 different countries and regions. By the end of 2008, the utilized foreign investment in the zone had amounted to US$2.6 billion.
Major investors in the zone include Mars, Ball, Seminis, Attech, Owens Corning, Asahi, Kewpie, Red Bull, Clariant, Closures and Tinghsin. Mars, a leading food maker, invested a total of US$175 million in a pet food production factory in Beijing Yanqi EDZ in 2006. The factory commenced operation in 2007 and is capable of producing over 120,000 tons of pet food annually. Tianjin Tsinghsin launched a US$4-million mineral water producing line in the zone in 2004 that covers an area of 4,421 sq m. The Thai beverage-maker, Red Bull, invested a total of RMB 250 million to build a production line in the zone in 1997. The plant’s annual production capacity is 400 million units.
Industrial parks rated BB are considered attractive at a below-average level. Industrial parks with this rating are typically either in the development stage or are lacking certain important elements. There are 50 with BB rating among 254 national and municipal level industrial parks.
