Lhasa Economic and Technological Development Zone (Lhasa ETDZ) rated “C” by China Knowledge in a research report published today. The area was approved by the State Council and established in September 2001 as a state-level development zone.

Located in Lhasa’s west, the zone is 10 km from the city’s downtown area, 50 km from Lhasa Gonggar Airport and 2 km from the railway station. State Highway 318 runs through Lhasa ETDZ. In 2009, Lhasa ETDZ’s GDP was RMB 2.3 billion, up 8.02% year on year, and accounted for about 15% of the city’s total.

The zone’s economic pillars are mining, building materials, folk handicrafts, Tibetan medicine, characteristic plateau food processing and tourism. Representative enterprises include Tibet Tianzhi Biotechnology Development, Qizheng Tibetan Medicine, Tibetan Traditional Medicine Pharmaceutical, Tibet Zhongkai Mining Group, Tibet Mingzhu Satellite Navigation Application Technology and Tibet Qisheng Native Products. Tibetan Traditional Medicine Pharmaceutical Factory, with total assets valued at RMB 180 million, is the largest Tibetan medicine producer in China.

In 2009, the utilized FDI of the zone reached US$18 million, accounting up 84.87% year on year. By the end of 2009, there are more than 130 enterprises with a total registered capital of RMB 1.6 billion located in the zone.

The latest figures show that in the first quarters of 2010, value-added industrial output of the zone amounted to RMB 40.34 million, up by 100%. The gross industrial output hit RMB 176.22 million, increased by 78.44%.
