BMI View: BMIs cautious outlook for Malaysia's construction sector in 2011 appears justified, with construction activity in the first half of the year moderating significantly. Nevertheless, BMI believe that the sizeable number of public infrastructure projects implemented in 2011 could boost construction activity in the latter half of the year. BMI are therefore maintaining their 2011 full-year forecasts for the Malaysian construction sector, with real growth projected to reach 5.6% year-on-year (y-o-y). However, beyond 2011, BMI expect construction activity to decline due to a lack of financing from the private and public sectors, pulling down construction real growth to 4.6% per annum between 2012 and 2015.

Key developments that will impact growth include:

- In July 2011, Malaysian state-owned company Petronas Gas (PetGas) planned to raise project financing of MYR1.2bn (US$400mn) for the construction of the 300 megawatt (MW) Kimanis gas-based power plant in Sabah, one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. The fundraising is expected to cover 80% of the total cost of the MYR1.5bn project and to be conducted through Islamic bonds (sukuk) or a term loan.
