Market Growth Rates Recovering, However Fragmentation Increasing

The North American market for natural & organic personal care products is recovering from the financial crisis, with sales exceeding US $5 billion for the first time last year. Market growth stagnated in 2009, however healthy growth rates are resuming once again as consumer demand for 'chemically-clean' cosmetics and toiletries strengthens.

The major drivers of market growth are widening distribution and new product launches. Penetration of natural & organic personal care products is increasing in supermarkets, drugstores, mass merchandisers and club stores. New product launches are having a positive impact by making natural products more accessible and visible to consumers. Retailer private labels are expected to show a large rise in market share in the coming years. Private label products are popular as they offer natural personal care products at affordable prices.

The supply-side for natural personal care products is becoming increasingly fragmented. Over 600 brands are present in the North American market, however very few have significant market share. A two-tier market has developed, whereby large brands are occupying the first tier and small-medium size firms are in the second tier. The gap between the tiers is widening as large brands – such as Burt's Bees and Bare Escentuals – receive capital inflows to expand market share.

Organic Monitor forecasts the market share of natural & organic products to approach 10% of personal care product sales in the coming years. More mergers, acquisitions and investments are likely as investors and large cosmetic firms are attracted by the high growth potential. Successful brands are predicted to be those who can build strong distribution and differentiate their products in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

The 2nd edition of this report analyses the US and Canadian markets for natural & organic personal care products, which is segmented by product category:

- Natural & organic skin care products
- Natural & organic hair care products
- Natural & organic oral care products
- Natural & organic cosmetics
- Natural & organic deodorants
- Other natural & organic personal care products

Market information for each product category includes market size, revenue forecasts, pricing analysis, competitive landscape, sales channel breakdown and consumer trends. Recommendations are given to existing participants and new entrants looking at growth opportunities in this emerging market. Market shares and profiles are given of the leading brands, manufacturers, importers and retailers in US and Canada.
