China Coal Industry 1H 2011 covers the performance of the global and Chinese coal industry in terms of production, consumption, imports, exports, and reserves. It also covers the safety of coal mines, the role of coal in energy generation in terms of production, consumption and advantage, coal chemical industry, coal prices, investment, environmental pollution, market trends and outlook, plus the profile, comparative matrix and SWOT analysis of the industry leading players.

Coal continues to play a major role in the energy resource mix in China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal. In 2010, raw coal production in China showed an 8.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) growth to 3.24 billion tons due to higher coal prices and robust domestic demand. China’s coal consumption increased 5.3% y-o-y to 3.18 billion tons in 2010, largely driven by coal demand from the power sector.

During 2010, China saw a continuous increase in coal imports thanks to robust demand for the fuel, while exports fell amid fast rising price in the domestic market. China became a net importer of coal for two consecutive years with net import volume of 146 million tons for the year, representing a 40.9% y-o-y increase.

The supply and demand of coal in China is expected to remain moderately tight in 2011. The government will continue its efforts in monitoring the merger and acquisition of coal mines, further eliminating production capacity and closing small coal mines. Coal prices are expected to increase in 2011, as compared with 2010, in accordance with changes in the market.
