Future Challenges for the Port and Shipping Sector
Informa Law, Dec 2008
If countries all over the world are to safeguard the strong competitive position of their ports in years to come, investment and operational decisions need to be taken today. And given the extremely dynamic nature of the maritime and port sector, the future will be very different than the present.
It is, however, impossible to predict the future accurately. Instead, we can try to eliminate some of the uncertainty by developing possible future scenarios in the maritime and port sector. Whichever market player gains that insight first will be able to translate it into a competitive advantage.
This book contains the revised papers of a colloquium all of whom are experts in their field and/or important players from the world of business and policymaking.
Specific topics discussed:
- Maritime trade, encompassing two issues: the estimation of future trade flows and how predicted evolutions in international trade will impact on demand for shipping capacity - Developments in ship construction and their economic consequences - Future developments in ports: the interplay between technology and economics - The future role of port authorities, coupled with the role of national and international public authorities - The future economic fabric of ports -- Hinterland transportation or landslide handling -- Financial developments
