Indonesia Coal Industry 1H11 covers the performance of the global and Indonesian coal industry in terms of production, consumption, imports, exports, domestic sales, resources and reserves. It also covers the risk factors, Indonesian coal policy 2005-2020, the importance and advantage of coal in energy generation, the challenges and weaknesses facing the coal industry in Indonesia, alternative energy, investment, government regulation, coal prices, and market outlook, plus the comparative matrix and SWOT analysis of the leading industry players: PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk (PTBA), PT Bumi Resources Tbk (BUMI), and PT Adaro Energy Tbk (ADRO).

Indonesia’s coal industry continues to prosper and grow. In 2010, Indonesia’s coal production rose by 7.4% year-on-year to 275.2 million tons, mainly due to higher coal prices which encouraged mine operators to expand output for export. More than 75% of the country’s coal production is exported to other countries, namely Japan, China, India, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Coal demand growth in Indonesia is fueled in large part by the Asian powerhouses, like China and India, as the expanding economies seek to electrify their countries. Regional and domestic coal demand provides a robust long-term outlook for Indonesian coal producers. According to industry analysts, Indonesia’s annual production is expected to double by 2020 as producers continue to embark on large-scale coal development and expansion projects.
