The navigation industry is going through a transition phase as a result of the introduction of numerous low-cost PNDs and navigation-capable Smartphones. Whilst several Tier 1 suppliers have started to launch low-cost navigation systems, there still exists a significant price gap between typical embedded navigation systems and low-cost portable devices. In order to bridge this gap, vehicle manufacturers are beginning to develop and launch hybrid systems that can utilise the low-cost navigation capabilities of portable devices whilst benefitting from embedded components in the car with enhanced usability.

This report provides an overview of the different navigation integration solutions for Smartphones and PNDs. The report also analyses the various connectivity technologies and apps-based solutions that can help vehicle manufacturers develop harmonised solutions.
