The IntelliNews Ukraine Food Sector Report ( November 2011) presents the latest news from the following sectors: grain, bread and bakery, flavouring , milk and dairy, fruit and vegetables, meat, alcohol beverages, fish catch, and major companies in the Ukrainian food industry.

Agriculture presently contributes 10% of Ukraine's GDP and employs 20% of the population. Food processing is one of the fastest-developing sectors of Ukraine’s economy, growing at an estimated 20-30% annually.

Nearly 97% of foodstuffs consumed in Ukraine are produced domestically. In 2010, Agricultural production declined by 0.1% y/y, the State Statistics Service has reported.

Across agricultural enterprises, production reduced by 0.8%, and in households by 1.8%.

Grain crops production fell by 15%. The crop yield in Ukraine amounted to 39.2mn tonnes, although at the beginning of the season a result was expected at no less than 45mn tonnes. In H1, agricultural production grew by 3.2% y/y, compared to 3.4% y/y growth seen in H1/2010. At the same time, the volume of agricultural enterprises' output was up 6.9% up; in household economies by 0.2%. Agricultural production rose by 3.5% y/y in Jan-May and by 5.3% y/y in Q1/2011. Agricultural exports rose by 41% y/y to USD 900mn in Q1/2011. The volume of agricultural production in all categories of farms grew by 5.3% y/y, including at agricultural enterprises by 11.4%.

The state implements stimulating programmes and provides compensations to agricultural producers and others. The programmes that support the agricultural business will be active during the next 5-10 years. Periodically during the last 4-5 years, the investment attractiveness of the agricultural sector of Ukraine has grown.

Astarta (AST PW), Mriya (MAYA GR), Myronivsky Hliboproduct (MHP SA), Avangard (AVGR:LI) are the largets argicultural holdings in Ukraine.
