This study provides U.S. automotive technicians' evaluations of brands in the hand tools, pneumatic/air tools, power tools, handheld scan devices, and tool storage devices segments. Additionally, distribution channel shares are estimated by brand in each product category. Finally, the importance of factors such as availability, durability, ease of ordering, order accuracy, price, quality, timely delivery, and warranty are evaluated. Results are based on telephone interviews conducted with 400 technicians representing auto dealer service shops, collision repair shops, general repair shops, specialty repair shops, and tire dealers. The survey was conducted in March 2011. It follows similar surveys done in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Since 2007, Frost & Sullivan has been tracking the U.S. automotive tools market through the perceptions of automotive technicians. Consistently, hand tools have been the most utilized automotive tool (with xx percent regular usage this year); however, other automotive tools surveyed(pneumatic/air tools, power tools, handheld scan devices, and tool storage devices) are also highly utilized, but to a lesser degree. For nearly all product categories covered, quality is the most important feature, with durability either a close runner-up or tie for most important feature.Overall, brand distributors are the most popular purchase channels. Snap-on is the most owned brand of all the automotive tools—hand tools, pneumatic/air tools, power tools, handheld scan devices, and tool storage devices. Coinciding with Snap-on’s high ownership share, it consistently receives the best reputation rankings and strongest loyalty index scores. Overall, Snap-on receives the highest satisfaction scores for most tool categories.

However, for pneumatic/air tools, Mac Tools receives the highest satisfaction scores. Within the power tools category, Ingersoll Rand and Mac Tools receive the highest satisfaction scores. Alternative power train vehicles such as hybrid and electric vehicles are an insignificant share of automotive technicians’ work. That is a function of their presence in the overall population. By 2016, alternative power train vehicles are forecast to represent x.x percent of the total vehicles in operation (VIO). Historically, at around x percent of VIO is where the aftermarket starts to pay attention to a particular brand or technology. As more of these vehicles hit the road—whether due to unstable fuel prices, concerns about the environment, and so on automotive technicians will need to be prepared to maintain/repair them. Currently, more automotive technicians are prepared to work on hybrid vehicles versus electric vehicles (xx% versus xx%).
