Global ABS Industry - Growth Reliant on Chinese End Use Sectors

Summary

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is one of the most commonly used engineering plastics with applications in sectors such as home appliances, electronics, automotives and industrial. ABS is made from the polymerization of acrylonitrile and styrene in the presence of poly-butadiene. The most unique feature of ABS is that its properties can be modified by changing the proportion of monomers. Due to this it can be used as a commodity plastic also. The amount of acrylonitrile in ABS grades varies from 15% to 35% while the amount of styrene and butadiene varies in the range of 40-60% and 5-30% respectively. Acrylonitrile in ABS provides good strength and chemical resistance while butadiene contributes gives higher impact strength. The styrene component in ABS makes it glossy and rigid. ABS is also blended with other polymers such as polycarbonate to suit specific purposes. The ABS polycarbonate blend provides a favorable combination of thermal and mechanical properties making it popular in the electronic and electrical sectors.

The ABS industry is highly dependant on China, which accounted for 63% of global demand in 2010. Since China is the only major geography where the demand from the major end use sectors is growing, it is expected to remain the consumer of ABS in the future.
