The text provides guidance for AMEs and flight surgeons, particularly those practitioners who may be developing familiarity with the discipline. The authors are careful to remain focused and avoid repeating data that are already presented in other general aerospace medicine texts. However, this excellent edition has changed and grown considerably since the earlier editions, and Dr. Rayman has continued to add authors to broaden the clinical topics covered.
Any text that covers medical conditions that may affect pilots must make choices regarding the extent that each condition is covered. This text does not try to provide the detailed signs, symptoms, differential diagnosis, diagnostic testing, treatment and outcomes for each condition. However, most aeromedically significant conditions and the interplay between the affected aviator and the aviation environment are well delineated. It would be difficult for any book to suggest final flight certification decisions when the environment and performance envelope of a fast jet pilot and a sport pilot/recreational weekend flyer are so widely varied.
