Several of the leading appliance technology innovators are focusing their R&D expenditures on advanced technologies that will help to minimize environmental concerns. General Electric spent $3.9 billion on R&D expenditures in 2010 focusing on energy-efficient products for consumers and businesses. LG Electronics spent a total of $1.31 billion on R&D expenditures in 2010 and is focusing on making major products 15% more efficient than they were in 2007 by the year 2012. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, one of the leading appliance technology innovators, dedicated $1.7 billion on R&D expenditures in 2010, up from $1.5 billion in 2009.

The company's R&D increase was dedicated to improving technology and services. Samsung Electronics' R&D expenditures increased the most in 2010, up $1.5 billion from $6.49 billion in 2009. The company has shifted its business focus from hardware to software content. Middleby Corporation is a prime example of how early focus deems significant results. Middleby's focus on energy-efficient technology since the 1990s has put the company ahead of the learning curve, allowing highly efficient products to hit the market earlier than competitors. Wow! Pizza Oven was designed to be the most energy-efficient, fastest-cooking conveyor oven on the market - 30% more energy efficient than other 40-inch bake chamber conveyor ovens. The oven also cooks pizza 35% faster.

The new-generation Mini Wow! Oven won the 2010 Kitchen Innovation Award from the National Restaurant Association. Consumers are always seeking appliances that are more convenient in terms of reducing the time of the chore, enabling better results, or allowing the consumer to multi-task. Appliance manufacturers are producing automated appliances that provide accessibility to these features. Highlighted at the September 2011 Appliances IFA show, Gorenje's IQcook uses induction cooktop sensor technology to control cooking.

The system can automatically bring water-based foods to a boil and adjust the temperature to maintain a boil. IQcook guarantees users that water will never boil over and will automatically shut down if the pot boils dry. Electrolux's AEG branch launched the CuliSense oven. The oven helps automate cooking through sensors and controls that calculate the use of energy, time, and cooking mode for the specific dish. The owner can activate the function with a button.
