SMEs in India - Market Report 2011

SMEs have played an important role in boosting economic activity and creating ample job opportunities for skilled as well as unskilled labor in India. This report states that there are more than 100 lakh SME units in India with investment of above Rs. 1lakh crore. The sector has recorded double digit growth during the last four years. It contributes 40% to industrial production and 6% to GDP.
The report details the structure of the SME sector in terms of its size, investment, output, sector, products, and form of enterprise. The report also provides strategic insights relating to regulatory framework for the sector, its growth prospects and the challenges it faces in the long term as well as the short term.
The manufacturing segment dominates most of the SME sector in terms of number of enterprises. Partnership is the most common form of organization in small and medium enterprises with a small section of the business units opting to register as a private company.
