Royal Dutch Shell Plc (Shell) is an integrated oil and gas major involved in multiple businesses, such as the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, the refining and marketing of crude oil products such as fuels, lubricants and bitumen and the production of petrochemicals. The company is headquartered in the Hague, Netherlands. The company’s upstream segment is involved in the extraction and production of crude oil and natural gas globally. Shell’s upstream business is divided into two parts including Upstream America and Upstream International. The Upstream America segment manages the company’s upstream business in North and South America. Its international operations are primarily located in the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, the US, Russia, Malaysia, Brunei and the UK. The company’s production and reserves were around 1,189.8 MMboe and 14,001.8 MMboe, respectively, as of 2010.

Shell’s downstream business comprises various segments such as refining, supply and distribution, as well as the marketing of refined products. In 2010, the company had interests in more than 30 refineries with a refining capacity of around 4 MMbbl of crude oil per day. Gasoline, diesel, heating oil, aviation fuel, marine fuel, lubricants, bitumen, LPG and sulfur are some of the products made in these refineries. The marketing of refined products includes both retailing and business to business marketing. The company is also involved in the production and selling of numerous petrochemicals, including ethylene, propylene, styrene monomer, solvents and polyethylene. Its downstream segment also administers Shell’s interests in alternative energy and CO2 management. The alternative energy resources of the company include biofuels and wind energy. Shell has been developing a biofuel conversion process for a considerable period of time.
