Plavix has lost its patent in EU in 2009 and it is expected to go off patent in the US in 2012. Patent expiry of Crestor (rosuvastatin) is 2016 in the US and 2017 in EU. However, the expected launch of novel first-in-class (FIC) therapies like autologous cell therapy (Ixmyelocel-T) and gene therapy (Collategene) in the late stage of forecast period and growing prevelance of disease would drive the PAD therapeutics market in the coming years. Collategene, a gene therapy was earlier filed in Japan but recently AngesMG Inc. has withdrawn its NDA filling and would conduct more clinical trials to further evaluate the results. Collategene is under preparation for Phase III trial in the US and EU and would start by the end of the fourth quarter of 2011. Ixmyelocel-T, another autologous cell therapy has completed its Phase II trial and the company, Aastrom Biosciences plans to initiate Phase III study under Special Protocol Assessment (SPA). Both the therapies have received fast track designation and are expected to show superior results in their Phase III trials. Overall, the PAD therapeutics market is expected to witness slow growth at a CAGR of 1.8% in the future.
