The report is an essential source of information and analysis on the global PAD therapeutics market. The report identifies the key trends shaping and driving the global PAD therapeutics market. The report also provides insights on the prevalent competitive landscape and the emerging players expected to significantly alter the market positioning of the current market leaders. Most importantly, the report provides valuable insights on the pipeline products within the global PAD sector. This report is built using data and information sourced from proprietary databases, primary and secondary research and in-house analysis by GlobalData’s team of industry experts.
GlobalData estimates that the global Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) therapeutics market was valued at $6,458.9m in 2010, and is forecast to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 1.8% over the next eight years to reach $7,422.3m by 2018. The current PAD therapeutics market is flooded with generics and branded drugs. There are many off labeled drugs also used for the treatment of PAD. The current branded drugs are Lipitor (atorvastatin), Plavix (clopidogrel), Ventavis (iloprost) and Crestor (rosuvastatin). Apart from these branded drugs, antiplatelets, beta blockers, vasodilators and generic statins are also used. The drug used currently reduces cardiovascular complications and further progression of the disease but do not treat underlying cause of PAD. The market is expected to show slow growth primarily due to genericization of the key drugs during the forecast period which will off set growing prevelance of disease in PAD therapeutic market. The market is set to witness patent expiration of various drugs such as Lipitor in the US and EU in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Plavix has lost its patent in EU in 2009 and it is expected to go off patent in the US in 2012. Patent expiry of Crestor (rosuvastatin) is 2016 in the US and 2017 in EU. However, the expected launch of novel first-in-class (FIC) therapies like autologous cell therapy (Ixmyelocel-T) and gene therapy (Collategene) in the late stage of forecast period and growing prevelance of disease would drive the PAD therapeutics market in the coming years. Collategene, a gene therapy was earlier filed in Japan but recently AngesMG Inc. has withdrawn its NDA filling and would conduct more clinical trials to further evaluate the results. Collategene is under preparation for Phase III trial in the US and EU and would start by the end of the fourth quarter of 2011. Ixmyelocel-T, another autologous cell therapy has completed its Phase II trial and the company, Aastrom Biosciences plans to initiate Phase III study under Special Protocol Assessment (SPA). Both the therapies have received fast track designation and are expected to show superior results in their Phase III trials. Overall, the PAD therapeutics market is expected to witness slow growth at a CAGR of 1.8% in the future.
