Mobile broadband internet and digital TV cable services are the new stars of the Romanian telecom market. Convergent operators such as RCS&RDS turn the tables on mobile operators and challenge their indisputable grip on the market.
Traditional mobile telephony and the analogic TV cable, which led to double digit growth rates in the years before the crisis, are losing ground. The telecom market continued to decrease in 2010, as consumption from both business and residential clients declined amid worsening macroeconomic conditions.
The mobile telephony sector maintained an eroding 60% market leadership position and the fixed segment kept on losing ground. The entire sector, which depends on the local market, decreased by 22% in 2010 compared to 2008, down to EUR 3.97bn. The sector made EUR 1.1bn less business in this interval, of which about EUR 850mn was the combined loss of business suffered by telecom operators Orange, Vodafone and Romtelecom.
