A major review of how workplace absence is managed made several recommendations including tax relief on spending to keep sick employees in work (or speed their return to work) such as medical treatment or vocational rehabilitation.

With promises made on NHS reform, the government would find it very embarrassing to promote tax relief on corporate private medical insurance.

The review suggests a new type of insurance based on offering rehabilitation benefits and keeping people in work.

Insurers and healthcare groups already offer employee wellness benefits either with or without insurance.

What the review suggests really does not fit in neatly with any existing insurance proposition, shoe-horning it will be clumsy

For the first time in years, the insurance and healthcare industries have the opportunity to develop brand new insurance and health combinations around rehabilitation. This may appeal to insurers who do not want to offer full private medical insurance, protection, insurers seeking opportunities, and even overseas newcomers who would come in without the baggage of existing UK insurance operations.

This new report looks at the background to the review, what the recommendations are, what the insurance and healthcare industries already offer to the corporate market on helping employees return to work quickly, and which insurers are most likely to offer this product.

The author, Ian Youngman, is an insurance professional who writes about health and insurance; and has published many authorative reports on these sectors.
