Market and Product Forecast: Osteoporosis - Prolia and odanacatib to restore growth in the market
Datamonitor, Nov 2011, Pages: 100
Despite major brands losing market exclusivity increasing generic competition, the osteoporosis market remains attractive. Over the forecast period (2010–20), nine pipeline products are forecast to launch across the seven major markets. These candidates will drive growth in this therapy area by addressing compliance, safety and efficacy unmet needs.
Features and benefits
- Evaluate a highly granular forecast with sales value projections to 2020 at the country, class, molecule, and product level. - Determine the impact of generics and pipeline products on existing brands - Quantify the sales potential for new osteoporosis treatments.
Highlights
- The osteoporosis market will grow over the forecast period across the seven major markets reaching $9.2bn in 2020 from $6.6bn in 2010 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during 2010–20 of 3.3%. Growth will be driven by the launch of novel pipeline products which will address market unmet needs. - The antiresorptive class of drugs is by far the largest in the market, accounting for an estimated 90% of the total sales in 2010. The uptake of novel antiresorptives Prolia (Amgen/GlaxoSmithKline/Daiichi Sankyo) and odanacatib (Merck & Co) will offset the fierce class generic erosion as all major brands prepare to lose patent protection from 2012. - The largest opportunity is for novel bone building therapies. The class is currently underserved with just the PTH and analogs offering a purely anabolic effect and this will remain the case at the end of the forecast period. Datamonitor forecasts Zosano’s, Zelos’s and Radius’s PTH candidates to launch with combined forecast sales of $966m in 2020.
