Indian overseas investment policies are now simpler and more liberal than they have ever been. As a result, Indian companies are fast-becoming a major global power in foreign direct investment. Indian firms have continued to invest worldwide throughout the global economic downturn and history has shown that those companies that invest during periods of recession emerge as the strongest players and are the best-prepared for the future.

The latest report in the Who’s Investing Now? series from Oxford Intelligence profiles 200 top Indian companies – a combination of well-established players and the next generation of global investors.

This report provides a range of benefits:

- An insight and analysis of FDI trends out of India
- 200 key company profiles – delivered online and in PDF format
- Rankings by latest available annual revenue and industry sector
- Excel database of 200 companies featuring 740 key executive contacts
- Details of 890 cross-border transactions
- Coverage of 10 key sectors and six additional sectors

India’s economic performance during 2009-10 has exceeded all expectations by reaching eight per cent growth - this puts India way ahead of average GDP growth compared to the rest of the world, especially the Western markets. Indian companies are fast-becoming a major global force in foreign direct investment. FDI by Indian companies more than doubled in the 2010/11 fiscal year, reaching US$43.9 billion, up from US$17.9 billion in the previous year, according to latest data released by the Bank of India. And, according to UNCTAD, Indian businesses are expected to invest around US$40-50 billion in the overseas market during 2011-12 as the global economy improves. Around 15 per cent of Indian businesses have already expanded to international markets, and 30 per cent more will be doing so by 2016-17.

The surge in outbound FDI in recent years is a measure of increasing Indian corporate confidence and competitiveness, coupled with the growing integration of Indian companies into the global economy. Indian firms are increasing their ability to compete globally, reflecting growing quality and cost competitiveness to sustain long-term international growth. Underpinning this development is a growing focus on core competencies, increased R&D activity and enhanced technological know-how. At the same time, factors such as easier access to overseas markets, natural resources, distribution networks and foreign technologies are motivating Indian companies increasingly to look outward in their efforts to internationalise their operations.

Who’s Investing Now from India? – the latest Key International Investors report from research-led FDI consultancy Oxford Intelligence - provides in-depth profiles of India’s top 200 international investors, and sheds light on those companies that are emerging as leaders of the next generation of global Indian investors.
