PA Market Report Japan
The Publishers Association Ltd, May 2011, Pages: 170
Even before the catastrophic events of March, the publishing market in Japan was facing major long-term challenges. The industry has stagnated for the best part of two decades. In 1989, publishers sold 941 million books and twenty–one years later sold only 702 million books at a value of ¥821.3 billion (£6.3 billon). The revenue is roughly equivalent to the value in 1989. However, even this level of sales has only been propped up by consistently increasing the volume of new titles each year, with 74,714 in 2010 compared to 72,055. However but it can also be argued that much of this flight from the printed word is merely a migration to a new platform such as Electronic dictionaries have cannibalised their print counterparts.
