The editors of Lab Manager Magazine and Frost & Sullivan recently conducted a survey to better understand the sequencing end-user base. A total of 79 Lab Manager Magazine readers qualified for the survey as current or future users of sequencing technology, representing research and clinical laboratories, core facilities, sequencing services providers, and major genomes centers globally.

This analysis investigates topics such as current and future adoption of sequencing technologies, brand and instrument preferences, outsourcing, laboratory budgets, sequencing utilization, applications, and challenges.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The primary research objective is to identify end-user trends in the sequencing technology markets.

The secondary research objectives are:

- Determine current and future sequencing instrument adoption and outsourcing
- Learn the reasons for adopting a sequencing instrument
- Discern the budget for sequencing instrumentation, consumables, and bioinformatics/data storage
- Determine the average sequencing output per month
- Identify the sequencing applications being conducted
- Pinpoint challenges facing sequencing users

OVERALL QUESTIONNAIRE CONTENT

Survey participants were asked about their demographic information—including country, laboratory type, organization type, job title, and role pertaining to sequencing technology.

Qualified survey participants were asked about their sequencing instrument adoption, brand and instrument preferences, and outsourcing activities.
Respondents were queried about their laboratory budgets for sequencing instrumentation, consumables, and data storage/bioinformatics. The survey also inquired about participants’ sequencing output and the main applications they conduct.

The major challenges facing sequencing users were also determined. Rounding numbers in some of the results represented in the charts of the study could cause some differences of one or two percentage points.

EXAMPLES OF KEY FINDINGS

- More than half of respondents have a capillary electrophoresis (CE) sequencer installed in their laboratories. Illumina, Life Technologies, and Roche 454 Life Sciences have the highest installed base of next-generation sequencers among respondents. Adoption of “personal” genome sequencers—such as
the Ion Torrent PGM™, Illumina MiSeq™, and Roche 454 GS Junior—are on the rise. Throughput, price of instrument, and speed are the three main purchasing factors when selecting a sequencing instrument.
- More than half of respondents either currently outsource sequencing work or plan to do so within the next two years.
- The three most popular sequencing applications of respondents are SNP analysis, targeted/
amplicon/exome sequencing, and RNA-Seq/Transcriptome sequencing.
- The most important challenges when using sequencing technologies are high cost per sample, data storage and management, and analytical tools and informatics.
