Uncertainty in Mechanical Engineering
Trans Tech Publications Inc, Feb 2012, Pages: 230
Series: Applied Mechanics and Materials, Volume 104
Selected, peer reviewed papers from the 1st International Conference on Uncertainty in Mechanical Engineering (ICUME 2011), November 14-15, 2011, Darmstadt, Germany
The objective of controlling uncertainty in mechanical engineering is significantly to enhance safety, reliability and economic efficiency in the development, production, use and conservation of natural resources. This special collection of 19 peer-reviewed papers offers an academic and industrial perspective on the description, evaluation and control of uncertainty in: 1 Development, 2 Production and 3 Usage. This work should meet the needs of a broad readership, and motivate further investigations.
Review from Book News Inc.: Papers from a November 2011 conference describe methods for controlling uncertainty in mechanical engineering. Major themes addressed include advanced methods of robust design, optimizing process claims with the help of mathematical models, mathematical optimization methods for robust product design, and mathematical models for the combination of active and passive load-carrying components within a system network. The conference papers are grouped in sections on uncertainty in development, in production, and in usage. Some specific topics include time-dependent fuzzy stochastic reliability analysis of structures, an ontology-based information model for the exchange of uncertainty in load carrying structures, and integration of smart materials by incremental forming. Other areas examined include fatigue life estimation under cyclic loading, assessment of uncertainty for structural and mechatronics engineering applications, uncertainties with respect to active vibration control, and the effect of suspension parameter uncertainty on the dynamic behavior of railway vehicles.
