Market Definitions

The total North American fall protection equipment market is growing and highly competitive. Participants range from small companies with a focus on a single type of equipment to a few large, multinational corporations that manufacture and supply many types of sophisticated safety products.

Competition can vary from region to region and also due to a product’s specific characteristics. The highest level of competition is among independent domestic manufacturers that specialize in a few segments.

Safety products industry business cycles reflect the need to regularly replace products that have limited life spans due to normal wear and tear or their design for one-time use.

For the purpose of the study we define the following fall protection equipment segments:

- Soft Goods: Goods made of fabric and other flexible materials. Harnesses and lanyards comprise the majority of this segment. Items such as temporary ladders and nets represent a smaller part of the segment. Soft goods are usually temporary products requiring a high replacement rate and are generally made for one person’s use or wear.

- Hard Goods: These are goods made of metal and other hard materials. Hard goods are often the objects to which soft goods are attached. Products in this segment include anchors, retractable lifelines, horizontal and vertical lifelines, and confined space equipment.

- Rescue Equipment: This segment includes equipment used to rescue workers who have fallen.

- Access Systems: Equipment that ensures safe access to confined spaces, such as tanks, trenches, pipes, or wells.

- Installed Systems: A manufacturer-installed or custom-designed protection system, which can be either temporary and permanent.

- Training and Services: All types of training of employees and safety supervisors, and technical, installation, and maintenance services are included in this segment.
