The wealth of mass affluent and high net worth (HNW) consumers in Western Europe was negatively impacted by the poor conditions in the market, mainly due to the financial turmoil in 2008 and sovereign debt crisis in 2011. However, the market is set to grow again in 2013 as the debt crisis is resolved.

Highlights:
- After strong growth in 2009 and 2010, at 6.6% and 4.3% respectively, the total liquid assets held by affluent individuals in Western Europe are showing a slight decline, at -0.1%, for 2011. - Affluent individuals held 69% of the total Western European liquid assets in 2010. This percentage is expected to increase mainly due to the increase in the number of affluent individuals in the region. - The poor performance of mutual funds and stock markets in 2008 and extreme volatility in 2011 had a negative impact on the total number of affluent individuals in Western Europe and caused a drop from in 2008. Ongoing uncertainty in the Western European wealth market is also expected to dampen growth in the 2011–15 period
