Abstract Five years of strong economic growth has seen the Norwegian banking industry regain most of its precrisis vigor. The growth, triggered by oil industry exports in 1993 but also supported by large public-sector investments, has allowed both the corporate and the private sectors to improve their performance, resulting in asset quality in Norwegian banks improving greatly and many banks reporting net write-backs in the past two years. The primary areas of remaining concern are Norway's (Kingdom of) high dependency on its oil industry and the fact that lending, in particular to the corporate sector, has been strong in 1997 and 1998.
