Abstract The analysis of rating transition and default activity undertaken in this study updates Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' annual review of credit quality trends in Canada. The purpose of this review is to assess the rank ordering of ratings to judge the degree of correspondence between bankruptcy remoteness and credit quality. Ratings are assigned on a prospective basis, that is, to provide a forward-looking opinion of the creditworthiness of obligors. Ratings are most useful, therefore, if they consistently and accurately predict the probability of default. This study compares the performance of ratings assigned to Canadian companies by Standard & Poor's relative-to-observed default activity.
