This month, we note the following key points: The global corporate speculative-grade bond default rate increased to 1.13% in June from 1.09% in May, but still remains near all-time lows. By region, speculative-grade default rates were recorded at 1.72% in the U.S., 0.54% in Europe, and zero in the emerging markets. From January through June 2006, 12 defaults were recorded among entities rated by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services, affecting rated debt worth US$5.5 billion, two more than reported a month earlier. Globally, the speculative-grade default rate has remained below the long-term (1981-2005) average of 4.66% for 29 consecutive months.
