Abstract
After hitting a low of about US$460 per ton less than a year ago, pulp prices have rebounded strongly by over 20% to the current level of about US$560 per ton, with further improvement likely over the coming months. Chart 1 illustrates the increase, using prices for northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp, the benchmark pulp grade. A review of pulp markets points to strengthening fundamentals, including little global capacity addition in the near term, strong North American and European demand, and progress toward a recovery in Asia. This could mark a significant turnaround for a sector that has experienced just one strong year since the beginning of this decade.
