Abstract
The past year has ushered in a flurry of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the U.S. telecommunications and cable TV sectors. Generally receptive capital markets have helped support some large transactions, as companies used stable cash flows from their mature businesses to expand into high-growth segments or to fund opportunistic add-ons that benefit from the acquirer's economies of scale. Two major acquisitions have closed thus far in 2011: Comcast Corp., already the largest cable TV operator, established a major programming presence with its purchase of NBC Universal, while the combination of CenturyLink Inc. and Qwest Communications International Inc. created the largest domestic pure-play wireline telephone company.
