Abstract The ratings on Cupertino, Calif.-based Seagate Technology PLC reflect Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' expectation that the company will sustain its 'fair' business risk profile (as defined in our criteria) through industry transition and consolidation, while pursuing a moderately more aggressive financial policy than it has in the past two years. We believe the hard disk drive (HDD) industry is highly competitive, and characterized by rapid product evolution and commoditization. Recent consolidation in the industry, with Seagate's intent to acquire Samsung's HDD assets, along with a similar consolidating acquisition by a competitor, is likely to be a positive factor over time, with the potential for more stable pricing for remaining participants and less cyclicality in operating trends.
