Abstract
Since Standard & Poor's last semiannual roundup on Latin American banking, overall trends have persisted. Brazilian banks' lending activity and asset quality continue to rebound sharply from the dramatic but brief setback that followed the January 1999 recession, while profitability has remained strong throughout the period. Mexican banks' much slower recovery from the 1995 crisis finally began to gather steam in the second half of 2000. This year, lending growth and the cleanup of problem loan portfolios should continue, although profitability could be limited by squeezed margins, all assuming that U.S. economic growth does not slow too much.
