Industry Report Card: U.S. Regional Banks Reported A Profitable Fourth Quarter, With Few Exceptions Feb 11

Abstract
The smaller U.S. regional banks that Standard & Poor's Ratings Services rates generally reported encouraging results in fourth?quarter 2010, illustrating the industry's gradual recovery. Nearly all of the banks were profitable and the majority reported sequential earnings growth, although a few banks continued to struggle with net losses. Loan asset-quality performance, which companies' exposures to commercial real estate (CRE) markets in their regional or local economies influence the most, was mainly responsible for the quarterly results. The credit quality of companies in this group continues to reflect historically high nonperforming assets (NPAs).
