Abstract Chilean banks continue to be the most insulated from the economic and political problems affecting much of Latin America. Additionally, they benefit from the country's financial system environment, which Standard & Poor's sees as less risky and more transparent than those of other countries in the region. Despite a slow economy, their asset quality and profitability remain strong, with indicators showing a recovering trend comparable to international standards. The largest banks have also consolidated their market position through mergers, such as that of Banco de Chile (A-/Stable/A-2) and Banco Edwards, and Banco Santiago (A/Negative/A-1) and Banco Santander-Chile (A/Negative/A-1) have recently initiated a similar process.
