Abstract
Singapore's financial institutions survived the Asian financial crisis of 1997/1998, but now the changing operating environment, which is marked by stiffening competition, presents an even greater challenge for many of the institutions. Commercial banks, finance companies, and stockbrokers operating in Singapore now face an environment characterized by lower profit margins and increasing customer expectations. Economies of scale are becoming increasingly important as institutions seek to compete with one another. Smaller institutions will find it increasingly difficult to keep pace with larger players. Given these changes and increasingly demanding operating conditions, financial institutions with small market positions and limited revenue diversity might be forced to merge with larger players in the medium term.
