Abstract NY -- Standard & Poor's CreditWire 3/15/96 -- Standard & Poor's places its double-`A' claims-paying ability rating of American States Intercompany Pool (ASIG) on CreditWatch with negative implications. The CreditWatch placement is driven mostly by Standard & Poor's concern over ASIG's business review rather than the recent announcement that its direct parent, American States Financial Corp., intends to undertake a partial initial public offering. Since initiating its `New Directions' strategy in 1990, ASIG's premium volume has dropped 20% as the company pruned less profitable accounts and tightened underwriting standards.
