Bank Loan Ratings Expanded in Australia Jul 99

Abstract Bank loan ratings continue to play an increasingly important role for benchmarking credit risk at loan origination and for monitoring movement in credit risk over the life of the loan. This trend has resulted in strong growth in Standard & Poor's Bank Loan Ratings (BLR) service in both the U.S. and Europe, with 1020 BLRs assigned to loans totaling approximately US$580 billion in the syndicated loan market at April 30. Chart 1 depicts the rapid growth in this sector, especially over the past two years. In Australia, Standard & Poor's has recently expanded its BLR service, bringing to 12 the number of entities assigned BLRs.
