Abstract
The telecommunications industry is one of the driving forces behind the economic development of any country. In Latin America, regulators have recently taken major steps to encourage telecoms, seeking mainly to promote healthy competition. A series of initiatives seeking to improve infrastructure, expand coverage, ensure service quality, and keep telecommunications services affordable to Latin American populations fostered growth overall in second-quarter 2011. Mexico, Brazil, and Chile are among the most active markets in the region and provide examples of current regulatory trends.
