Abstract
Input costs continue to rise, and the economic recovery is slow. The credit quality of U.S. consumer products companies in the food, beverage, and durables subsectors could be constricted if higher energy, food, and clothing prices force consumers to reduce spending. Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' current credit outlook for the first half of 2012 remains stable for U.S. consumer food and beverage companies, but less favorable for consumer durables companies, as compared with 2011. Our December U.S. economic forecast is somewhat more upbeat and depicts an economy that has picked up steam in the second half of the year, with forecasted GDP growth of 2.9% for the fourth quarter of 2011.
