Abstract (Editor's note: This commentary, originally published on Oct. 11, 2000, is being republished to correct some ratings in table 1 and to change the company name from FDX Corp. to FedEx Corp.) The air freight industry consists of a heterogeneous group of companies that transport three classes of air cargo--heavy freight, express packages, and mail--on an expedited basis (see chart 1). Increasingly, large government or quasi-government postal operators are acquiring private-sector air freight operators, creating globally integrated operations. Private operators are expanding their geographic and product offerings with both their public and private competitors.
