Abstract
On Sept. 20, 2011, the ZEW Center for European Economic Research in Mannheim reported that German investor confidence in September fell for the seventh month in a row to its lowest level in more than two and a half years. The center said its index of investor and analyst expectations, which aims to predict developments six months in advance, declined to negative 43.3 from negative 37.6 in August. Economists expected a drop to negative 45, according to the median of 37 estimates in a Bloomberg survey (see chart 1). Similarly, ZEW's gauge of current economic conditions decreased to 43.6 from 53.5 in August (see chart 2).
