The Japanese Real Estate Market Continues To Struggle Oct 09

Abstract
The Japanese real estate market remains depressed due to the weakened global economy, which started to slump after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in the U.S. in September 2008. Recent surveys by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) show the extent of the downturn within the real estate market. In the land price survey it released in September 2009, the MLIT reported a continuous decline in prices for the 12-month period from July 2008, reflecting the difficult economic conditions. In addition, August 2009 new housing starts were below the previous year, showing consecutive year-on-year decreases from December 2008 through August 2009.
