Abstract
Wide variations in the definition and measurement of banks' loan quality mean that crossborder and domestic appraisals and comparisons can be challenging in the emerging EEMEA markets, despite fairly standardized asset classification terminology. Meaningful analysis and comparison relies on an understanding of the methodology and regulation behind the figures, and the basis on which different indicators are measured. Other factors introduce differences between banks and banking systems, such as accounting practices and the treatment of loan write-off, restructuring, and interest accrual.
